The Most Wonderful Time of Year

Happy December everyone!! After a bit of shopping this weekend we put the finishing touches to our Christmas decor…

Then we had our friend Anthony (who also shot our Halloween photos) come over to shoot our Christmas photo.

The above photo is what we will be sending out to friends and family this year, however, enjoy the following “outtakes”…

For several years now, I’ve made it my tradition to wear the same dress for our Christmas photo. Why?  Because it’s pretty gosh darn fantastic! Come on, how amazing is this dress? Am I right? A few years ago I saw it at a Eugene antique shop right before Christmas, and at the time, it was more than I wanted to pay, so I left it there. But a few weeks after the Christmas holiday I found myself returning to the shop and to my delight discovered that the dress was half off! So I snapped it up!

I hope the holiday season is treating you all well so far!

Find Your Perfect Fit at eShakti

Just prior to leaving for California I was approached by eShakti, an on-line clothing company that produces semi-custom garments.  I had never heard of the brand before and did some digging.  The website offers up both 9 to 5 wear as well as special occasion wear and there is something for everyone.

I can’t tell you how often I see clothing and I think “Gee…I wish that had sleeves” or “Is that suppose to be a dress?” (Seriously, does nothing have sleeves anymore? And do people even know what a decent hemline is these days?). At eShakti, you can add sleeves of varying lengths, shorten or length dresses and skirts and much more!  Additionally, some of their clothing offers up a vintage flair, which is why I agreed to a collaboration.

I chose the Floral Illusion Yoke dress due to its Hispanic feel plus it had pockets!

I simply love the sheer yoke and the embroidery and especially the pockets, which are real pockets! What do I mean by that? Some pockets these days are so shallow they might as well not be there at all!  But these are deep enough that I can put my iPhone in one and it won’t fall out!

There is a lot to be said for eShakti.  Most of their garments are under $100, with only a few over.  Their customization options are just swell.  The skirt length and sleeve options have to be the best, and with it comes to custom sizing there is no stone left unturned!  However, I opted for a standard size garment, and I really wish I hadn’t.  The standard sizing chart (which goes up to a 6X) offers up just the bust, waist and hip measurements, and it was a different measurement that was a problem, however one that can be changed in the custom options… Arm sizing. I am finally coming to terms that I have large arms, and as a girl who faced body issues before I am weary to “work on” my arms.  Anyhow, the point is, the sleeves were a shade on the tight side, and made for some movement uncomfortable.  So if you have run into this problem before, and are interested in a garment from eShakti, I highly recommend checking out your arm measurements and paying the super low rate of $7.50 to order a custom garment to ensure you get a proper arm fitting.

Other pros of the website are all of the “specs” on the garments.  They tell you a lot about the cut, structure, material, and zipper location for their garments.  These are all wonderful details to include.  The site however does not include were the garment is made, for those curious this dress was made in India.

My other concern about the dress are strictly personal however you may share the same views as me.  I have a huge aversion to side zippers (seriously, this could be a post in itself).  And most of their dresses have side zippers, including this one.

Overall, I am very pleased with the garment, and may consider eShakti in the future, but will for sure be ordering a custom garment! It’s so nice to know that there are companies out there that know not every woman is built the same!

1938 Picnic

Today I traveled with Angelica to Vancouver to join in a little 1938 themed picnic with some of our fellow vintage loving friends.  We sat in the shade of the trees surrounding the army barracks of Fort Vancouver and giggled over the jitterbuggin’ slang book Jessie and Julie of Fab Gabs brought, and drooled over the 1937 catalog that Rhiannon of Garb-Oh Vintage brought along as we noshed on our lunch and maybe drank a little hooch, courtesy of AlexSandra!

Rhiannon brought along her spiderweb purse that she just recently finished crocheting herself from a 1938 pattern! Isn’t it fantastic? She then added a perfect little Bakelite spider brooch.

Solanah of Vixen Vintage made her darling dress, with even a bow on her hat to match!  You can’t go wrong with red, white and blue!

I also had the pleasure of meeting new company, including the very talented Anna of Anna in Technicolor.  Her blog is full of her glorious sewing projects, including some superb 1800s garments!

Of course everyone was wondering what themed event would be next…maybe pumpkin picking in our farmer’s daughter best, or suits for an afternoon of shopping followed by drinks.  You’ll just have to wait and see!

Sizzling Vintage

This past weekend brought one of my favorite events of the year…the summer antique show at the Portland Expo Center.  Hosted by Palmer Wirfs, the summer Expo has over a thousand dealers selling various items ranging from fine furnishings from the turn-of-the-century to vintage clothing to collectable toys.

I attended all three days of the show this go’round, including day one with Rhiannon of Garb-Oh Vintage (and my latest sponsor I might add!) and we bumped into Lulu of Lulu’s Vintage, day two with my dad, and day three with Patrick and my friend Angelina who had never been before.

My pocket book full of cash, I walked up and down the aisles on the hunt.  While many things caught my eye, I ultimately walked home with bags full of vintage clothing (a few pieces for me and a few for the shop) including an amazing two piece sailor style outfit, a few dresses, blouses and even a girdle, bullet bra and multiple pairs of fully-fashioned stockings!  These are all things I’m keeping for myself…you’ll have to peek into The Atomic Hideaway Portland location near the end of the week to see if there’s anything you need!

I also scored some stellar anti-LBJ/war buttons (I believe I will soon need to do an entry regarding this collection of buttons), a celluloid reindeer brooch, and a two foot aluminum Christmas tree (which makes it the 16th one between myself and my dad…I think…)

I also snatched up a fantastic birthday present for a friend, but I’m keeping that under wraps…

There are quite a few more antique shows between now and the next Expo, which is in October, that I’m greatly looking forward to attending.

Stay tuned to my Twitter, Facebook or Etsy to see items when they are listed!

Fresh Vintage

Yesterday I shared with you my friend’s new shop, Retro Rejuvenation and that Lyndsie let me paw through her rack of fabulous inventory.  I picked out two pieces that I absolutely needed, including this stellar black wool circle skirt by Colony Casuals of California.

The other piece I had to have was this amazing blue and white dress by Paula Brooks.  There was one button missing, so Lyndsie let me pick through her huge collection of new-old stock buttons and I picked out these.  Which I actually thought looked better than the originals.

I look forward to future visits to Lyndsie’s shop, both as a customer and a vendor of her mall.  If you’re ever in Eugene, be sure to visit.

“Stop Being Demure. You’re Already on the Bed.”

Last night brought the season finale of Mad Men and a crowd of well dressed people to Portland’s Hollywood Theatre.

For the evening I wore a different dress than I intended.  Originally I was going to wear a chartreuse number that I thrifted awhile back, but when I walked into Hollywood Babylon this last week and saw this hanging up, I knew I had to have it.

The dress reminded me of something that Miss Kitka (Catwoman’s disguise persona in 1966′s Batman: The Movie) would wear.

The Best Dressed Contest brought nearly 20 people to the stage, dressed to the nines.  I lost out to a very well dressed married couple.  The woman was wearing a fabulous 1960s champagne colored satin and lace cocktail dress that I would loved to have called my own.

Another Sunday…Another Mad Men…Another swingin’ 60s outfit…

Last night I really broke out the mod with this geometric navy and cream mini dress.  Look at that hemline!  I came in a very close second in the evening’s best dressed contest.  I lost out to a gal that I’ve chatted with quite a few times over the course of the season.  She went to the Art Institute for fashion design and has quite the eye.
