A Rainy Day of Shopping
Yesterday I had the extreme pleasure of spending a day out shopping with the lovely Hannah, who I met at the Fur and Feathers Luncheon back in January.
Our first visit was a little shop that hasn’t been on my radar for too long, but will now become a staple of my downtown visits, Living Threads Vintage.
While I didn’t buy anything at the shop (although there is a hat calling my name that I may have to go back for) Hannah purchased three very basic and wonderful items (items this girl needed! She has expressed that nearly all of her wardrobe is comprised of novelty prints!), including the pair of darling, and very sensible, 40s shoes, picture above, a classic black pencil skirt, and a hat.
We also stopped in at Ray’s Ragtime, Buffalo Exchange, and Avalon (where I drooled over a stellar linen suit that may have to come home with me in the near future). We tried to visit Lulu’s, however, she is closed on Tuesdays. After our arms were full of delightful purchases, we stopped in at Mother’s for a bite to eat where we enjoyed fried ravioli. Seriously, one of the best things I have ever ate! Then, it was time to say goodbye…but just look at this girls loot! And her incredible style! Her jacket was too cute for words.

This looks like such a fun day. Shopping while it’s raining is wonderful… it gives you a perfect excuse for staying inside and browsing for longer! 😉

Oh, I know! It’s simply to die for! She said she has a similar one that was her grandmother’s. This one though has an AMAZING double sided lucite cameo zipper pull that is huge!

I especially love your circle skirts, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery… So since I’m going to DisneyWorld in December, and I’m seriously considering making a Disneyworld version for myself. That skirt is just too cute for words!
Can you tell us more about your jacket? I have a similarly cut jacket in black and white, and I’m having trouble dating it.

Doing a Disneyworld one sounds really fantastic! I’ve never been, and don’t know that much about that park (my obsession with Disney is pretty limited to Disneyland and the films, although I really want to go to Disneyland Paris), but it would be fun to do research about various attractions and ones that are no longer there.
And which jacket were you discussing? The brown one in this entry? It’s made of wool gaberdine, and dates to the 1940s. Tight “wasp” waists came into style after WWII, and became part of the “New Look” fashion that is attributed to the late 40s and early 50s. Suits were still popular in the first few years of the 50s too, as seen in films like Vertigo.
Oh I can’t wait for the next shopping trip! I’ll have to stash some cash away, you girls are obviously my kind of shoppers 😉
