Early on during the COVID-19 quarantine, I asked for blog post ideas, and someone suggested that I write about how we were coping with the whole situation. Well, one way I’m coping is watching Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood repeatedly. Like, I’m not joking. I’ve watched at least six times in the last five months. When I first saw the film back in July of last year (you can check out the blog post here) I completely fell in love with the movie, and specifically loved Zoe Bell’s character of Janet, who literally appears for a brief few minutes and delivers only seven lines.
Even before seeing Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood I loved Bell. She is the epitome of a badass. I especially loved her in Tarantino’s 2007 film Death Proof. And during quarantine she put together this awesome “Boss Bitch Fight” challenge. If you’ve seen Once Upon a Time in…Hollywood, she’s the person who breaks up the fight between Bruce Lee and Cliff, and is married the Kurt Russell’s character, Randy.
Her outfit was simple, and prime for a closet cosplay, meaning I could use pieces from my own closet, with one exception, her hat.
I’ve been wanting a good straw cowboy hat for awhile anyway, as they good for keeping the sun off and breather better than wool ones, perfect for summer, so I saw this as an excuse to finally get one. Not all straw cowboy hats are created the same, and I wanted to one that had at least a similar weave style as hers, and in pausing the movie, I was able to spy a key detail, a blue and red shield like pin on the hat band. In looking at hats on-line I realized this was the United States Team Roping Championships logo, which appears on certain Resistol hats. Through this I was able to actually find the exact model of hat, which is the Wildfire. Thankfully my searching fell when there was sale happening, so I was able to get it at a halfway decent price. It should be noted that the film takes place in 1969, and the USTRC wasn’t founded until 1990. But, it’s a tiny detail that appears on screen for a second, so I doubt many caught it.
While not visible clearly in the screencaps, I did notice she had some plastic hoop earrings, so I threw on a pair of bakelite hoops I owned.
My green capris are cuffed, and her’s are tailored, but I’m always on the hunt for cute green pants, and would totally buy a pair closer to her’s if I found them. Also, her shoes have a small heel to them, so I’ll also keep an eye out for a pair closer, because white shoes are shockingly hard to come by!
Is there anything specifically that’s getting you through this tough time? If you’re in need of some stuff to watch, I made a watch-list for Disney+ here.
