Last weekend Disneyland celebrated its 66th anniversary. We visited the park with a few friends, and I used the occasion to make another vintage Disneyland ephemera inspired outfit.

I’m a sucker for vintage ephemera, especially Disneyland related ephemera. Disneyland created some great paper shopping bags over the decades, and awhile back I purchased one on Ebay. When I showed it to Patrick, he instantly said “That would make amazing fabric.” So, like my dress from our June visit, which was based on wrapping paper, Patrick took to the computer and painstakingly recreated the bag’s design.

Over the last year and a half, I’ve made the same dress in a variety of prints (including the dress I wore during our June visit), and I gave consideration to making that same dress again in this print because of how much I love the fit of that dress, however, the design just screamed to be made into a mod dress. While I love the look of mod 60s dresses, I don’t much care for them on my body, so I was hesitant. I ordered yards of fabric in the cotton I had worked with previously, fearing if I hated the mod dress, I could just make the classic sun dress style I had made before. Well, I ended up actually loving how the mod dress turned out and fit, but because I purchased cotton, it wrinkled tremendously as the day went on. So I’m giving serious consideration to ordering the design in some sort of poly or poly-blend and remaking it so its more wearable.

A lot has changed since our June visit, the biggest one is that the park is almost back to normal operations, including the lifting of the mask requirement, however, even though both Patrick and myself, as well as the friends we spent the day with, are vaccinated, Patrick and I wore our masks (which of course matched my dress) for most of our visit, with the exception of photos, and of course eating and drinking.

  3. At some point in my youth, on one of my family’s visits to Disneyland, I bought a souvenir. What that souvenir was has completely faded from my memory. But what is still a vivid image in my mind, like it were yesterday, is the shopping bag. It was THAT shopping bag. The one you made a dress out of. Thanks for the trip down memory lane to the “trippiest” shopping bag graphic design ever conceived.
