Star Wars Celebration

May 31, 2022, 2 Comments on Star Wars Celebration

I feel like it’s been a minute since I talked about Star Wars here on the blog, and it’s certainly been awhile since I last shared a con experience with y’all! For reasons I’m sure we’re all aware of! But all of that is about to change! Because last weekend was Star Wars Celebration at…

Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the LA County Fair

May 25, 2022, 1 Comment on Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the LA County Fair

Since moving to California in 2014, I had yet to make it to the Los Angeles County Fair. But I just knew I had to go this year, and the LA County Fair turned 100! Los Angeles County tried and failed six different times to start a county fair (while nearby Orange County had it…

Bans off our Bodies Rally

May 18, 2022, 4 Comments on Bans off our Bodies Rally

Last weekend Patrick, some of our friends, and myself attended the Bans Off Our Bodies Women’s March in Los Angeles to rage against the leaked intention to overturn Roe v. Wade, the 1973 Supreme Court case that allowed people legally obtain an abortion. There is a part of me that is shocked that in the…

From Disaster to Icon: Main Street Electrical Parade Turns 50

May 11, 2022, 3 Comments on From Disaster to Icon: Main Street Electrical Parade Turns 50

As a child in the early 90s I basked in the colorful glow of the Main Street Electrical Parade as it whirled through Disneyland during the handful of visits we made before it “glowed away forever.” I was so enchanted and even bought the VHS of the parade and discarded lightbulb so a piece of…

Ain’t No Glory in the West

May 4, 2022, 1 Comment on Ain’t No Glory in the West

Over the last couple of years, Orville Peck has quickly become my favorite musician out there performing today. His unique country sound and style makes him a living Gram Parsons for me (and if you’ve been reading the blog for awhile, you know Parsons is one of my all-time faves), and I made it my…

Guys, I did a thing. I hadn’t had my hair profes Guys, I did a thing. I hadn’t had my hair professionally cut since 2017. And I’d been thinking about getting a light shag/wolf/low key Farrah for over a year now, to better fit in with my vibe. When I saw @florencepugh ‘s hair in Hawkeye (swipe for reference photos!) I knew that was the look I would feel the most comfortable going with. Not too drastic, but still a change. I’ve never had layers before, and haven’t had bangs of any sort since I was in like the second grade. This is a big change for me, and was ultra nervous. But @jameyonmelrose is a true hair goddess. She listens so well before hand and then works her magic. I can’t believe I didn’t do this sooner. Thank you so much, Jamey!

BLOGGED! A visit to @muzeo for their exhibit about BLOGGED! A visit to @muzeo for their exhibit about one of my favorite artists, J.C. Leyendecker. If you don’t know the name, don’t fret! Head over to the blog to learn all about this amazing artist who put queer in the mainstream right under heterosexual noses. Huge thanks to @artofclarksilva for curating this delightful and informative exhibit.
I can’t help but wonder what will become of this I can’t help but wonder what will become of this fantastic neon sign in DCA with the revamp of the Wharf into San Fransokyo. It’s an amazing piece of neon art that should either go to the @disney Archives or @museumofneonart .
I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Ho I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again. Hollywood Forever is an icon of LA, but can be overwhelming, with its sprawling lawns and rows of headstones. Even with a map it can be difficult to locate the resting spots of your favorite stars. Those wishing to visit the variety of celebs who call Hollywood Forever home should book @cemeterytourguide ‘s tour. She effortlessly guides visitors through while sharing some of Hollywood’s most interesting stories and humanizing stars, icons, and legends. Plus, there is @closeupthecemeterycat a star in his own right! 🐈‍⬛
Today we said goodbye to @p22mountainlion along wi Today we said goodbye to @p22mountainlion along with thousands of other mourners at his Celebration of Life. I was immensely thankful for the ability to attend, thanks to @drunkensquid who was able to secure tickets when I was unable to. For the uninitiated, P22 was a mountain lion who crossed two freeways unscathed before arriving in Griffith Park which he called home for the last ten years, becoming a celebrity in his own right after gracing the pages of National Geographic when he was photographed in front of the Hollywood sign. He also became an ambassador for the crisis facing mountain lions, who are facing the possibility of extinction (in as soon as 15 years) due to inbreeding due to lack of biodiversity. The key is building wildlife bridges and soon the world’s largest will open. But funding is required to build more. I highly recommend following P22’s account to learn how to help. 🐱 While wildlife and climate issues are serious matters, today I couldn’t help but be reminded of the Psych episode where Shawn and Gus attend a memorial for a sea lion, where life is certainly imitating art.
The other day I was at my local used bookstore and The other day I was at my local used bookstore and stumbled upon a collection of vintage 60s-early 80s occult and conspiracy books. While I didn’t buy them all, I bought a fair amount. The highlight being first paperback editions of Anton LaVey’s Satanic Bible, and Satanic Rituals for $2.97 each. When snapping photos, Houdini of course got in on the action, just like how he climbed atop the record player when I was playing Occult Explosion. My little perfect demon child.
Sometimes photos that @patrickarlt and I take neve Sometimes photos that @patrickarlt and I take never see the light of day. Every once in awhile I’ll throw one or two up here on Insta, but for the most part, the random sign or abandoned building I snap a picture of gets forgotten about because it never gets a dedicated blog post. Today that changes! Head over to the blog for a glimpse at some of the remnants, remains, and random snapshots of last year. 📷 Link in bio and stories.

The sun has set on another drive-in. We all knew @ The sun has set on another drive-in. We all knew @missiontikidrivein ‘s days were numbered. We got more time than we thought, but the unceremonious closure that occurred last night hurt. I found out about the closure too late to make it out there one more time. This drive-in got myself, many of my friends, and I’m sure many more, through some of the toughest parts of the pandemic. It was one of the few places we felt comfortable gathering at in the pre-vaccine days. We stood, 6-10 feet apart, masked, and were happy to be out and seeing those we loved and enjoying some literal good old fashioned entertainment. Thankfully there are a handful of other drive-ins near me to visit, but this highlights how important it is to support YOUR local drive-in. If you want a better understanding of the economics of running a drive-in I highly recommend @april_wright_1999 ‘s two documentaries on the subject.

Are you a fan of Hollywood classics such as Casabl Are you a fan of Hollywood classics such as Casablanca and Rebel without a Cause? Or how about TV series such as the 60s era Batman, Gilmore Girls and Friends? Or perhaps my beloved favorite The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.? Or are you a fan of @therealelvira ‘s iconic movie? It’s rare I go to the movies anymore unless it’s the drive-in or a private screening, but when I found out via @tinyteacupvintage that @thefridacinema was showing the 2001 masterpiece that is Josie and the Pussycats I knew I had to throw on my @superyakishop tee and go. Movie theater popcorn was missed as I wore my mask the whole time (sans this brief photo) but it was a thrill to see this on the big screen for the first time in over two decades. This movie was everything to me for years, and call me crazy, but this movie is subversive AF. It’s about being who you are, and I love that. It was also a delight to be around so many other amazing fans who truly appreciate this movie. Remember Dujour means family! And seatbelts!
