What a Guy, that Gaston!

With the live-action remake of Beauty and the Beast hitting theaters (I’ll leave my personal opinion out of this), Disney has been doing a lot of promotion and even gave one of their restaurants, Village Haus, a temporary Beauty and the Beast overlay, to become the Red Rose Taverne. I really wanted to visit it in a Beauty and the Beast inspired outfit and accompanying parasol, and even though I adore Belle, Patrick suggested a brilliant idea for a parasol, which leant more toward a Gaston Disneybound.

I snuck a little mounted jacklope on the parasol, even though there isn’t one in the film, and wore my Hungry Designs jackalope mount brooch as a reflection of the mounted animals.

Inside the Red Rose Tavern, Guests can enjoy some new decor, including some faux stained glass based on the ones in the film, and antlers galore! They can also taste new foods inspired by the film, including the “grey stuff”, which in this case is a red velvet cake wrapped up in grey frosting.

The “Grey Stuff” was, as the song states, “delicious” if rather sweet though. It’s unclear how long this overlay will be in the park, but it’s certainly fun while it lasts!

San Diego Comic Con

In my last post, where I shared that the ever lovely Jessica of Chronically Vintage did an interview with me, I mentioned I would be attending San Diego Comic Con. Well, I’m home now, and what a weekend! While I’ve been to other cons in the past, this was my first San Diego Comic Con (SDCC), which is the largest and best known con, and is often the event where companies and studios make large announcements and show their first footage from upcoming movies and TV shows. This con now draws in over 100,000 people offers up a massive buffet of panels to attend (everything from movies and TV, to cosplay, to how to break into comics, and much, much more), gaming opportunities, portfolio critiques, and a convention show floor offering unique collectables, including of course comics, exclusive merchandise, and original works by those who are budding in the industry in the Artists’ Alley portion. There is so much to see and do that it is overwhelming!

So, first off, I was able to attend SDCC, by pure fluke, through my friend Mel, of Deela Designs, who I met when we both lived in Portland (she moved to the Seattle area shortly after Patrick and I moved to California) at Wizard World Portland. Mel was invited to cosplay as character from the upcoming Assassin’s Creed film by the company who does the game, she was also on a panel about cosplay.

I was on my own for most of the con, as Mel was working, though I did get to spend some time with fellow geeky vintage blogger, Carla, of Tiny Angry Crafter, although that girl also had to work at the con. And I failed to get any snaps of myself! But like I said in the post before, I didn’t make any new cosplays, and for one day I wore a Star Wars dress by Her Universe, which I can wear at Disneyland, and plan to do so in the near future and will photograph it there. So, this post is more of a glimpse into what SDCC is like, read about some of the neat panels I went to (like about about Peanuts, and another about Beauty and the Beast), and you’ll get to see all of the goodies I came home with!

We Interrupt the Vintage: Childhood Movie Edition

We interrupt the vintage to share a movie review and a glimpse into the AR as a child.

As a child born in 1988 I grew up in the throng of the Disney Renaissance. The Little Mermaid, the film that kicked off Disney’s animation comeback was released in 1989, and with the invention of the VCR, children of the 1990s grew up on a steady diet of Disney fantasies, for they could now experience the old classics such as Cinderella and Snow White too. Waking Sleeping Beauty, now showing at The Hollywood, tells the house of cards like story of the Disney animation department, which was actually kicked out of the original animation building and moved to a much less glamorous location after the dismal reception to the 1985 film The Black Cauldron.The documentary chronicles the trials and rough patches that the animators had to sit through as Michael Eisner, Jeffery Katzenberg and Roy E. Disney spared over film titles, budgets and methods of animation. Covering the span of films from The Black Cauldron to The Lion King, Waking Sleeping Beauty dives into the technical innovation of the sequel The Rescuers Down Under, which was done all in the computer, and the classical Broadway musical approach that was first used in The Little MermaidBeauty and the Beast, my favorite, was also the pinnacle of this period, earning the Golden Globe for Best Picture Musical or Comedy, and earning an Oscar nomination for Best Picture, the first animated film to do so, and the only until Up last year. The film however ends on a sour note, since Disney has somewhat reached the same point it was in 1980, and has let Pixar take over the genre of good family films.Let’s face it, Emperor’s New Groove was pathetic to say the least, and The Princess and the Frog was no where near capturing the magic that The Little Mermaid or Beauty and the Beast did.

I was obsessed to say the least with Beauty and the Beast as a child, seeing it five times in cinemas (a sixth later in life when it was re-released with its missing song “Human Again”) and watched it repeatedly on VHS while playing with B&B toys, wearing B&B t-shirts and sleeping under a B&B comforter. But I was also a lover of the other films to come out of the Disney Renaissance, such as The Rescuers Down Under, Aladdin, The Lion King and Pocahontas.

For me, this film is of great importance, as it should be for many my age. It dives into the heart and soul of our childhood films and what it took to produce such excellent and heartfelt films. Check out the film’s website to see where the film is showing and more info. If there is no cinema showing it near you, just wait until November 30th, when it will be released on DVD.
