All that Glitters – the 49’er Room at the Anniversary Inn

A regular stop for us on our route to Idaho is Salt Lake City. We decided to select a more unique hotel for our one night stay, selecting the kitschy Anniversary Inn 5th South location. But we got a slice of home, as we selected the 49’er themed room.

Exterior of the Anniversary Inn, a large brick structure with a covered patio with vines growing around it, a sign features an elegant building an text reading "The Anniversary Inn"

A mural continues the village theming of the lobby.

The lobby evokes an old village, with various facades and a lamp post.

A cave like room evokes a mine, with a sluice box shower.

While the lobby may evoke an old European village, step inside the Forty-Niner and you’re in a Californian log cabin, complete with a mine themed bathroom. Water cascades from a sluice box into large jet tub that rests next to a mine cart sink. The Anniversary Inn is a true bed-and-breakfast, with breakfast dropped off at your door in the morning! We enjoyed our breakfast inside our rustic room before hitting the road again.

Wood lines the walls giving the feel of being in a log cabin.

A cave like room makes up the bathroom, with rock texture walls.

A lantern lights in inside of the closet.

A classic moon window outhouse door opens to the toilet.

A shelf features faux gold nuggets, and hanging on the log cabin like walls are images of miners.

An old mine cart serves as the sink in the bathroom.

The walls are stacked with half pieces of logs, to evoke a log cabin, a bed sits in the middle with a painting to the right that acts like a window.

In 1978 Tom and Dorothy Heers stayed at the iconic Madonna Inn, famous for its themed rooms. They left inspired. Despite the success of the Madonna Inn, Utah thought a hotel with themed rooms was too much of a gamble, and banks refused to give a loan to the couple. Eventually the Sherwood Hills Resort saw potential. They allowed the Heers to renovate their least popular rooms. The result was a drive-in theater inspired suite and a Tom Sawyer themed suite, both proved to be incredibly popular. With proof the idea worked in Utah, the couple was able to finally get their loan, and they purchased the Kahn Mansion and transformed it into the Anniversary Inn in 1991. They added a second Salt Lake City location with 5th South in 1993. Later they expanded to Logan, Utah, and then Boise, Idaho.

The 5th South location is housed in a portion of the old Salt Lake Brewing Company building. Founded in 1891, it was once a massive brewery built to resemble a castle, producing 100,00 barrels of beer each year. But Prohibition, anti-monopoly movements, and other breweries spelled an end, and the once sprawling structure was whittled down to what now houses the 36 rooms at the Anniversary Inn.

There are so many different themes available, you’re sure to find something you like! Including a biker roadhouse, Cape Cod, a Hawaiian getaway, Italy, the jungle, Egypt, even a room inspired by Treasure Island, and more! Check in to the 5th South Anniversary Inn at 460 S 1000 E, in Salt Lake City. Explore the rooms, other locations, and book your stay on their website.
