Last year I started a new tradition here on the blog, sharing ten songs from my Halloween playlist, which currently has over 200 songs on it. Because seriously, there is way more to Halloween music than “Monster Mash” and “Thriller.” Last year I just threw together a random selection (which you can catch here), but this year I decided to focus on some songs with witchy vibes.

“Mad Witch” by Dave Gardner

I absolutely adore the train like beat in this number, making it a solid spooky rockabilly classic. It has been covered by European artist, Marcel Bontempi, who has many more amazing spooky songs! You can check out his version here.

“Season of the Witch” by Donovan

This song is almost already a staple of the Halloween season, but I really wanted to throw it in. It’s simply fantastic, with a sharp sound that just gets you in the mood for fall.

“She’s My Witch” by Kip Tyler

“She’s My Witch” has a great slow drag type beat to it and you can’t help by sway to it. The lyrics are fantastic and describe presumably the singer’s witchy girlfriend.

“Witch’s Brew” by Darla Hood

In this peppy number the singer lists ingredients for a love potion. It’s sung by Darla Hood who started off as a child actor with the show Our Gang, and later went on to have a singing career. Her first role as an adult was the 1959 film The Bat, with one of my favorite actors, Vincent Price.

“Witchcraft” by The Misfits

We all know Frank Sinatra’s 1957 version of this song, but personally I’m more a fan of this version by the cryptic band The Misfits. Of course nearly anything by The Misfits is perfect for Halloween.

“Wicked Old Witch” by John Fogerty

Fogerty is perhaps best known for founding the swamp rock band Creedence Clearwater Revival, which also has its fair share of spooky songs. But this twangy number from Fogerty’s solo career is a gem.

“I’d Rather be Burned as a Witch” by Eartha Kitt

Eartha Kitt is one of the strongest women to live in the 20th century. She has quite the biography, and is an icon in so many ways! When it comes to singing she is mostly remembered for “Santa Baby” but this should be a Halloween staple of the same caliber!

“Pagan Baby” by Creedence Clearwater Revival

As mentioned earlier, CCR has its fair share of Halloween vibe type songs. “Bad Moon Rising” has been featured on many Halloween playlists, but this often overlooked song should be added as well.

“Strange Brew” by Cream

What your Halloween playlist really needs is some psychedelia! And this number by Cream is perfect.

“Witchy Woman” by The Eagles

The Eagles are for sure one of the greatest bands of all time, and I have a soft spot for them because one of the founders, Bernie Leadon, had previous been with one of my favorite bands, The Flying Burrito Brothers. “Witchy Woman” came off of their debut album in 1972, and was one of three top 40 hits from it.

Bonus

I’ve decided to throw in two bonus tracks, ones that aren’t explicitly witchy, but because of their use in American Horror Story: Coven, they now issue a great witch vibe.

“Seven Wonders” by Fleetwood Mac

Midway through the season, Fleetwood Mac front woman, Stevie Nicks appears, playing herself, and several of the band’s songs are played throughout the show. “Seven Wonders” is played when the witches search for their new leader and they must complete a series of tasks known as “The Seven Wonders.”

“Right Place, Wrong Time” Dr. John

Dr. John is a New Orleans icon, and as the show takes place in New Orleans it was only fitting to have at least one of his songs in the show. “Right Place Wrong Time” is played when a witch is burned at the stake.
