Yesterday was my birthday…it’s weird to have a birthday during such a wild time in our world…and because of social distancing, I couldn’t have a party or anything. Not that I’ve had one that was my own really in recent years. My birthday weekend has fallen on Dapper Day weekend the last couple of years, and I have many friends who are also April babies, so we tend to celebrate together during Dapper Day weekend since so many of us attend Dapper Day. For those curious about Dapper Day, the unofficial “dress to your best” day at Disneyland, it has been postponed to June. So this year I had to get creative… and was inspired by one of the four dresses I’ve made (so far) as part of “sewcial distancing.”
Patrick and I whipped up a cactus cupcake cake we saw online. No guests? No problem! Taxidermy works great! I brought Mr. Van Cleef, our jackalope, out for a little birthday picnic in the backyard. Patrick and I have never decorated cakes before and while this isn’t as gorgeous as the one we based it on, I think it isn’t all that shabby! Colonel Whiskers was forced to stay inside during our little picnic, as he was getting too curious over the cake.
If the cut of this dress looks familiar, it is because it’s the same as my Bird Cage dress I made last December. It’s just such a flattering cut, and I think very conducive for prints. So I’ve made this dress in four different prints since the COVID-19 safer-at-home order was issued for California. Most of which have been designs by There Will Be Cute on Spoonflower, and most of those have been Halloween themed actually, which who knows, that might be the next time we are allowed out in society!
I also whipped up a matching mask, because why the hell not? If you gotta wear a mask, why not make it fun?
Has anyone else celebrated or will celebrate their birthday in quarantine?

Happy birthday! That cake is amazing. You and Patrick did a fantastic job!
I need to boop the jackalopes nose(why can’t I remeber its name??)! It is lovely he was able to join you outside.
Mr. Van Cleef! He mentioned he misses your boops!
Feeling semi confident my birthday will also be in quarantine 😂. You look radiant! Happy bday my friend!!!
We will still celebrate in whatever way we can safely!!! And thank you!
Stunning and beautiful Happy Birthday (mrs) I need to learn how to sew
Happy birthday! Such cute fabric and a beautiful dress!
Happy Birthday! You look so adorable. Great job on the cactus cupcake cake.
I’m another corona birthday baby. I hated giving up my celebration dinner with friends, but Tim got take-out from our favorite place so we at least ate well. Happy Birthday to you!
Thank you! And Happy (belated) Birthday to you as well! That was sweet of Tim!
Oh, that is the cutest fabric! Love the outfit. Happy Birthday!
Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you, happy birthday, dear Janey, happiest birthday wishes to you!!!
This is so inspiring, positive and awesome, my dear friend. I love that you guys made the best of quarantine life to help ensure your b-day was still full of fun and good cheer, and hope that your day was as lovely as possible.
My b-day is rounding the corner again in July, followed a mere 26 days later by Tony’s in August. As there’s a decent enough chance we’ll still be self-isolating then, I will definitely be taking a page from your book for our own at home, two person (+ Annie, of course!) celebrations this summer (ditto for Canada’s birthday on July 1st).
With all my heart, I hope that you have an incredibly positive, safe, beautiful and happy year ahead.

Thank you! I do hope that if we are still in this by July you two can celebrate as best as you can!
Happy birthday! Such a cute dress! I love Spoonflower!
I am so late with this, but – happy birthday Janey! Reading blog posts is proving to be a pre-baby luxury that I took for granted!!
It sounds like you managed to pull off a lovely celebration despite the restrictions. I will be doing the same ‘at home’ for mine in a week, and for my husband’s this Saturday. Not sure we’ll be having such lovely sunshine though!
Happy belated birthday! I just love that dress!
