15 Vintage Essentials

June 12, 2013, 28 Comments on 15 Vintage Essentials

Awhile ago I was contacted by a reader who recently noticed a fashion trend, 15 essentials for your wardrobe.  She liked this idea, but felt that the contemporary trends didn’t help her in building up her vintage wardrobe, so she suggested the idea to me! Just remember, not every piece has to be vintage! Several…

Vintage Must Have: Snood

February 13, 2013, 12 Comments on Vintage Must Have: Snood

Okay, so this isn’t really a must have for all vintage-loving gals. But it is for those who love the 1940s.  Today’s vintage must have is a snood… Snoods have a history dating back to the Renaissance, had a revival in the mid 1800s, and came back into vogue during the 1940s due to World…

Vintage Must Have: Muff

December 8, 2012, 14 Comments on Vintage Must Have: Muff

It’s finally getting chilly, with temperatures not even going above 50 degrees! So it’s certainly time for my favorite winter accessory…a muff! I’ve always had an adoration for the cozy little hand-warmer. The muff was a must for ladies at the turn-of-the-century and made a comeback in a small form in the 1940s and 50s. …

Vintage Must Have: Crinoline

August 1, 2012, 12 Comments on Vintage Must Have: Crinoline

A crinoline (also known as a petticoat) is a must have if you’re a fan of fuller skirts.  The full skirts and circle skirts of the 1950s and early 1960s require a crinoline to produce that classic silhouette seen in so many magazines of the time period. I have several crinolines, because, well, I need…

Vintage Must Have: Sheer Blouse

July 11, 2012, 8 Comments on Vintage Must Have: Sheer Blouse

Summer is in full swing, and that means it’s hot, hot, hot!  Some of my favorite summer staples are my sheer blouses that I have acquired.  Often made of nylon, sheer blouses are some of the best ways to beat the heat while also looking elegant and refined. But remember ladies, slips are quite required…

Vintage Must Have: Slip

June 24, 2012, 8 Comments on Vintage Must Have: Slip

Now that we’ve discussed bullet bras, girdles, and stockings, there is one more element in creating the perfect vintage foundation to your garments: a slip.  I know many ladies who do not wear slips, and I’ll openly admit, I did not start wearing a slip on a regular basis until a few years ago, but…

The sun has set on another drive-in. We all knew @ The sun has set on another drive-in. We all knew @missiontikidrivein ‘s days were numbered. We got more time than we thought, but the unceremonious closure that occurred last night hurt. I found out about the closure too late to make it out there one more time. This drive-in got myself, many of my friends, and I’m sure many more, through some of the toughest parts of the pandemic. It was one of the few places we felt comfortable gathering at in the pre-vaccine days. We stood, 6-10 feet apart, masked, and were happy to be out and seeing those we loved and enjoying some literal good old fashioned entertainment. Thankfully there are a handful of other drive-ins near me to visit, but this highlights how important it is to support YOUR local drive-in. If you want a better understanding of the economics of running a drive-in I highly recommend @april_wright_1999 ‘s two documentaries on the subject.

It’s rare I go to the movies anymore unless it’s the drive-in or a private screening, but when I found out via @tinyteacupvintage that @thefridacinema was showing the 2001 masterpiece that is Josie and the Pussycats I knew I had to throw on my @superyakishop tee and go. Movie theater popcorn was missed as I wore my mask the whole time (sans this brief photo) but it was a thrill to see this on the big screen for the first time in over two decades. This movie was everything to me for years, and call me crazy, but this movie is subversive AF. It’s about being who you are, and I love that. It was also a delight to be around so many other amazing fans who truly appreciate this movie. Remember Dujour means family! And seatbelts!

2022 was simultaneously an amazing and a really sh 2022 was simultaneously an amazing and a really shitty year. Those with a uterus lost a lot, but we are putting up a good fight, and winning. But right now I want to focus on some of the good elements. Here are some highlights from this year. Finally blogging about Angels Flight, Route 66 adventures, a birthday spent at the legendary Canyon Country Store, seeing Orville Peck four times, Star Wars Celebration, reopening of Tail o the Pup, seeing Elton John at Dodger Stadium, and dining at one of Gram Parsons’ old haunts, the Copper Room. This was also the year of house projects, many of which we still have yet to share! Here is to 2023, where we keep fighting for our right to choose, staying sane, working on ourselves, and having fun.

The boys are immensely concerned for the future of The boys are immensely concerned for the future of what they consider their room. Patrick and I decided this year was the year to move forward with a variety of house projects. We started with painting our dining room, and a custom TV cabinet, two bathroom paint jobs, a new wall later, we are now saying goodbye to our guest room. No, it’s not a nursery. I’m not pregnant. We are not having kids. It is becoming a home gym/library. Words cannot express how excited I am!
