Abandoned along the Highway
As mentioned in my post about Rock-a-Hoola, I love photographing abandoned locations, and we stumbled upon quite a few during our road trip, dotted in between tiny towns, and miles of fields. So here is quite the picture heavy post of what happens when buildings get left behind…
The next 11 photos are from what remains of the town of Thistle, established in 1883. One hundred years later, with a dwindling population of 50, it suffered from a massive landslide that took out most of the town, and flooded other parts of it.
While standing taking photos we suddenly heard that gentle, but ominous sound of small rocks tumbling down, and we looked up the hillside and spied at least a dozen dear walking precariously along the hill.
The remaining photos are a selections from places we saw and pulled over to photograph throughout our road trip.

Ever run into squatters on your abandon building searches? I’m always scared to stop by myself for that reason !
I haven’t actually. But I have a feeling there may have been one at this abandoned hotel I’ll share in my next post! The door was closed, but not quite, and it was the only one with a window open, but the curtains closed, where as all other rooms, the windows were closed, but the curtains open. But it is a valid concern, and I often think about it. So sometimes I try to put some space between myself and any open windows and doors. Like the house with the tree, those interior shots were done through the window.
Also, we are halfway through Westworld and that house with the tree is giving me the feels.
Wow- these are absolutely stunning images Janey! They are so atmospheric and haunting too. The onese with the buildings perfectly reflected in the water are so interesting.
