With Thanksgiving come and gone, it’s officially the Christmas season, and last year I decided to start a tradition here on the blog of sharing Christmas music from my vast collection, and started with California Christmas numbers. This year I decided to pull some of the western tunes to share with you today!

“Santa Got Lost in Texas” by Michael Landon

One day I hit the vintage Christmas record jackpot when I found Christmas on the Ponderosa, a album featuring songs sang by the cast of Bonanza in character, in it, this gem about how a cattleman helps Santa has become one of my favorites for the Christmas season. You can add this gem by purchasing the album on Amazon, ebay, and iTunes.

“A Rootin’ Tootin’ Santa Claus” by Tennessee Ernie Ford

I Love Lucy was my first introduction to Tennessee Ernie Ford, and I am continually charmed by this voice, and this cowboy Santa tune is perfect for a western Christmas. This song, as well as a few others on this list can be found on Christmas on the Range. Please note there are multiple albums with this title, and you’ll want to be sure to purchase the one that also reads “Cowboy Classics from Capital Records” and can be found on Amazon, ebay, and iTunes.

“Christmas Carols by the Old Corral” by Tex Ritter

I think I first heard this song during the holiday season in Frontierland, and quickly added it to my Christmas playlist, it paints a wonderful picture of cowboys bundled in leather and wool while singing carols. Like “A Rootin’ Tootin’ Santa Claus” this song can also be found on Christmas on the Range and purchased through Amazon, ebay, and iTunes.

“Ole Tex Kringle” by Tex Ritter

Also played at Frontierland, this song also offers a wonderful image of a cowboy-ified Santa Claus. “Ole Tex Kringle” is also available on Christmas on the Range (found on Amazon, ebay, and iTunes), as well as Old Country Carols which you can purchase via iTunes.

“I’m Gonna Lasso Santa Claus” by Brenda Lee

A fun little number that isn’t super western, but provides the vibe of children loving westerns in the 50s. This gem can be found on various albums on iTunes. You can also catch the punk version by Charla Fantasma on Riot Grrrl Christmas, also available for purchase on iTunes.

“The Night before Christmas (In Texas That Is)” by Gene Autry

Hollywood’s singing cowboy gives us a Texas-ified version of the classic “The Night Before Christmas.” This version can be found a several Gene Autry Christmas albums on iTunes, and Wilf Carter’s version can be found the Bear Family’s Christmas on the Range, available via Amazon or ebay.

“Merry Texas Christmas You All” by Gene Autry

Like California, Texas doesn’t have a classic white Christmas, and this number hits home for those living in sunnier states. This number can be found on Autry’s album Complete Columbia Christmas Songs on iTunes.

“Christmas on the Plains” by Roy Rogers & Dale Evans

Roy Rogers and Dale Evans are the the quintessential western couple, and this song features them both, it is also featured in Frontierland during the holiday season. I added this by way of an iTunes album called Songs of Christmas Past which sadly looks like its no longer available. And sadly I cannot find it on another album. However there are YouTube to Mp3 converters online.

“The Reindeer Boogie” by Hank Snow

A Christmas spin on the classic number “The Freight Train Boogie.” Add this Hank Snow number with the album Old Country Carols which you can purchase via iTunes.

The Cowboys’ Christmas Ball by The Killers

In 1890 William Lawrence Chittenden wrote a poem called “The Cowboys Christmas Ball” and later it was turned into a song, but this version by The Killers is by far the best. Their version includes some lyrical changes, most notably changing the setting from Texas to Nevada, because The Killers love their home town of Las Vegas. This song, and other Christmas songs by The Killers, can be found on Don’t Waste Your Wishes, available on Amazon and iTunes.
