Ain’t No Glory in the West

Over the last couple of years, Orville Peck has quickly become my favorite musician out there performing today. His unique country sound and style makes him a living Gram Parsons for me (and if you’ve been reading the blog for awhile, you know Parsons is one of my all-time faves), and I made it my goal to see him perform live once things opened back up. When he announced he was performing at both Coachella and Stagecoach music festivals in Indio, all I could think of was how easy it would be for him to just pop up to the not too far Pappy & Harriet’s in Pioneertown and do a show, well, he did and I was over the moon!

We snapped some outfit photos quickly while the light was still good in the middle of our pre-show dinner at the Red Dog Saloon, which is located at the end of Pioneertown’s Mane Street (yes, it’s really mane, like a horse’s mane), for delicious tacos.

As the sun set, Peck took to the stage in all of his fringe and rhinestone glory. Pappy & Harriet’s really is a unique and wonderful place to see a show. While I still would love to see a show inside, I was thankful for the outdoor experience, as we still have COVID running around, and I donned an appropriate fringed mask during the show.

Two posters for the show, which read "Tanya Tucker Orville Peck" in bright blue script across a darker blue background.

Peck was followed by country legend Tanya Tucker, who while I adore, we didn’t stay for too long, as we had a two hour drive home, and when the euphoria of Peck’s set ended I realized just how much my feet hurt.

This was actually the first of three times I’m seeing Peck this year. Yes, I said three. And it’s kind of on accident. He announced his tour with a date in Oakland far before he announced the date at Pappy & Harriet’s, so we bought tickets for the Oakland show. Then he announced the Pappy & Harriet’s show, and I wasn’t going to pass up finally seeing a show there after visiting so many times before. Then Palomino Festival, a new, one day music festival happening in July in Pasadena was announce, with Peck, and many other musicians I’ve wanted to see all playing! So I bought tickets for it too. The Oakland show is next month and I’m looking forward to finally getting out for a mini road trip.

If you’re unfamiliar with the masked cowboy, then check out this music video from his latest album, Bronco, below to get a good vibe for Peck’s sound and style. And if you fall in love, you can check out his website here.

Pappy & Harriet’s Pioneertown Palace is located at 53688 Pioneertown Road in Pioneertown. I highly recommend visiting Pappy & Harriet’s for a show, or just for a bite to eat. It’s such a unique and wonderful place up in the high desert. If you’re unfamiliar with Pappy & Harriet’s, you can check out my post about it here.
