Orville Peck’s 5th Annual Rodeo
If you’ve been reading the blog for the last two years, you probably know I’ve fallen head over heels in love with country artist Orville Peck, and last weekend Patrick and I attended his fifth annual Rodeo. In the past, his Rodeos have been single night events where he shares the stage with some of his musician friends. But this year he decided to make it a three day event at Pappy & Harriet in the high desert of Pioneertown. Long time readers are familiar with the live-in wild west set built in the 1940s, as I’ve been there multiple times, but if you’re new, I recommend checking out the Pioneertown tag to see and read more about this unique desert destination. While Pioneertown does have its very own motel (which we’ve stayed at before) we opted to stay at my favorite place, The Joshua Tree Inn (stay tuned for a post on our latest stay there!), so we snapped outfit photos there before heading up the dusty trail to Pioneertown.
Patrick and I went for all three days (although I failed to take any photos at the last night, except outfit photos! Oops!), and if you follow me on Instagram, then you might have already seen all of my outfits, as Peck was hosting a “Queen of the Rodeo” contest, where attendees shared their outfits on Insta, and the winner would be announced the final night of the Rodeo. No, I didn’t win, but I still got to meet Peck, and was given a rose by him because of my Gram Parsons shirt. Peck has mentioned that Parsons is one of his favorite musicians, and even put his name in a song. I was over the moon when he covered Parsons’ “Ooh Las Vegas” on the first night. It’s always a treat to hear one of his songs performed live.
Attendees of the Rodeo could enjoy a drag brunch at Pappy’s, a mechanical bull, get a tattoo, and enjoy the sights of Pioneertown, which included meeting the “Mayor” who you could even “kiss.” What that really means is giving him a treat Lady & the Tramp style. While Pioneertown is indeed a real town, its mayor is a ceremonial position, and the current mayor is one of the cute goats in town. Other animals have served as well, and there was even a cactus mayor! Our tickets also included a Q&A session with Peck, and it was moderated by his adorable niece.
The weekend has gone down as one of the best weekends of my life. Not only did I enjoy three nights of being serenaded by my favorite (living) musician, as well as a few other favorites, but I was exposed to other great artists that I will be adding to my music library. Check out the Spotify pages of few of my favorites below!
Pappy & Harriet’s Pionnertown Palace is open year round, offers both indoor and outdoor shows, and is located at 53688 Pioneertown Road in Pioneertown. Please visit their website for restaurant information and concert dates.
