The Bob’s Big Boy that Almost Never Was

January 8, 2020, 3 Comments on The Bob’s Big Boy that Almost Never Was

As I’ve said before, and as many of you know, I love visiting places that let you feel like you’ve stepped back in time, and one of those places is Bob’s Big Boy Broiler in Downey. But this place wasn’t always a Bob’s Big Boy, and it almost never was… It is no secret that…

Rock ‘n Roll’s Favorite Jewish Deli

July 18, 2018, 3 Comments on Rock ‘n Roll’s Favorite Jewish Deli

Canter’s Deli is borderline synonymous with Hollywood, but it is just as well loved by rock ‘n rollers as it is movie stars, and it was the late night place for the bands of the 1960s, and it’s said to be the only Jewish deli on the west coast to rival one of the east…

Sleep in a Tipi & Visit the Site of the First McDonald’s along Route 66

June 11, 2015, 7 Comments on Sleep in a Tipi & Visit the Site of the First McDonald’s along Route 66

During the week Patrick decided to surprise me with a mini, one night getaway at the Wigwam Motel in Rialto on Route 66! An icon of the Mother Road, the Wigwam Motel is a handful of concrete tipi structures (not actual wigwams, which are domelike in shape) that are quaint, and of course, small. There…

“Stop Being Demure. You’re Already on the Bed.”

June 11, 2012, 5 Comments on “Stop Being Demure. You’re Already on the Bed.”

Last night brought the season finale of Mad Men and a crowd of well dressed people to Portland’s Hollywood Theatre. For the evening I wore a different dress than I intended.  Originally I was going to wear a chartreuse number that I thrifted awhile back, but when I walked into Hollywood Babylon this last week…

“You Don’t Want Most of It. You Want All of It”

June 4, 2012, 6 Comments on “You Don’t Want Most of It. You Want All of It”

Another Sunday…Another Mad Men…Another swingin’ 60s outfit… Last night I really broke out the mod with this geometric navy and cream mini dress.  Look at that hemline!  I came in a very close second in the evening’s best dressed contest.  I lost out to a gal that I’ve chatted with quite a few times over…

“What Would it Take to Make You a Queen?”

May 28, 2012, 5 Comments on “What Would it Take to Make You a Queen?”

For Sunday’s episode of Mad Men I felt in the mood for a bit of flapper flair (since the week brought the release of the trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby) but sixties style of course! I can’t help constantly doing the Twist in this outfit.  It is just too much fun.…

“Surprise! There’s an Airplane Here to See You!”

May 21, 2012, 4 Comments on “Surprise! There’s an Airplane Here to See You!”

Ah, Sundays.  Sure, the weekend is over, but it also means it’s Mad Men time.  Once again we attended the weekly screening at Portland’s historic Hollywood Theatre. Unlike previous nights, this dress isn’t really anything special, just a 60s number I picked up a few years ago and bears an “Alper Schwartz” label in the…

“Isn’t This Suppose to Be Scary?”

May 14, 2012, 6 Comments on “Isn’t This Suppose to Be Scary?”

Due to the Hollywood’s hosting of the H.P. Lovecraft Festival, our weekly screening of Mad Men moved venues for the evening over to Sam’s Billiards, thankfully just one block from the Hollywood Theatre. The evening’s dress was made by my mum in 1970 during her senior year at college.  I paired it with lots of…

Getting My Mad Men On

April 30, 2012, 4 Comments on Getting My Mad Men On

Last night we enjoyed yet another lovely evening at the historic Hollywood Theatre to watch Mad Men on the big screen.  This evenings outfit was brought to you mostly by my grandmother. I took home this dress (and necklace) during our period of cleaning out her things after she passed away.  Sadly, she didn’t keep…

Together in the Truth

April 23, 2012, 5 Comments on Together in the Truth

Once again, myself, Patrick, and a few friends met up at Portland’s Hollywood Theatre for their weekly screening of Mad Men.  My choice of clothing for the evening? A slightly fitted sage green dress with an embroidered paisley pattern. The dress was a gift from my friend Alicia, who was clearing out her closet of…

The sun has set on another drive-in. We all knew @ The sun has set on another drive-in. We all knew @missiontikidrivein ‘s days were numbered. We got more time than we thought, but the unceremonious closure that occurred last night hurt. I found out about the closure too late to make it out there one more time. This drive-in got myself, many of my friends, and I’m sure many more, through some of the toughest parts of the pandemic. It was one of the few places we felt comfortable gathering at in the pre-vaccine days. We stood, 6-10 feet apart, masked, and were happy to be out and seeing those we loved and enjoying some literal good old fashioned entertainment. Thankfully there are a handful of other drive-ins near me to visit, but this highlights how important it is to support YOUR local drive-in. If you want a better understanding of the economics of running a drive-in I highly recommend @april_wright_1999 ‘s two documentaries on the subject.

It’s rare I go to the movies anymore unless it’s the drive-in or a private screening, but when I found out via @tinyteacupvintage that @thefridacinema was showing the 2001 masterpiece that is Josie and the Pussycats I knew I had to throw on my @superyakishop tee and go. Movie theater popcorn was missed as I wore my mask the whole time (sans this brief photo) but it was a thrill to see this on the big screen for the first time in over two decades. This movie was everything to me for years, and call me crazy, but this movie is subversive AF. It’s about being who you are, and I love that. It was also a delight to be around so many other amazing fans who truly appreciate this movie. Remember Dujour means family! And seatbelts!

2022 was simultaneously an amazing and a really sh 2022 was simultaneously an amazing and a really shitty year. Those with a uterus lost a lot, but we are putting up a good fight, and winning. But right now I want to focus on some of the good elements. Here are some highlights from this year. Finally blogging about Angels Flight, Route 66 adventures, a birthday spent at the legendary Canyon Country Store, seeing Orville Peck four times, Star Wars Celebration, reopening of Tail o the Pup, seeing Elton John at Dodger Stadium, and dining at one of Gram Parsons’ old haunts, the Copper Room. This was also the year of house projects, many of which we still have yet to share! Here is to 2023, where we keep fighting for our right to choose, staying sane, working on ourselves, and having fun.

We are not having kids. It is becoming a home gym/library. Words cannot express how excited I am!
