During the week Patrick decided to surprise me with a mini, one night getaway at the Wigwam Motel in Rialto on Route 66!

An icon of the Mother Road, the Wigwam Motel is a handful of concrete tipi structures (not actual wigwams, which are domelike in shape) that are quaint, and of course, small. There honestly wasn’t much to do in the small town of Rialto, and its neighbor, San Bernardino, but we found some light entertainment in the odd McDonald’s Museum, located where the very first McDonald’s was. We also stumbled upon the restaurant that Mad Men used for its Burger Chef scene in the episode “The Strategy” (S7 Ep6), Chris’s Burgers, which was in fact a Burger Chef originally. And, yes, we sat in the same booth as the cast in the scene.

September 2019 UPDATE: We recently stayed at the Wigwam in Holbrook, Arizona, which you can read about here, and it also discusses the cultural issues around the Wigwam Motels.

So glad you got to stay there! I’ve been wanting to go myself but having a hard time convincing the Mr to go with me! Thanks Patrick for the photos.
You do seem to find the coolest lodgings. This looks like such a fun, kitschy place to stay, although I’m curious about what the interiors of the rooms like like, I’ll have to find their website or something. Very cute dress, the minty color is so fresh.
LOVE that dress you’re wearing, and what a cool place!

Aww, how wonderfully sweet of him. That is such a good motel, I’ve never seen another quite like it before.
I love (!) your mint green dress. I have (a different looking) one myself and live it it during the spring and summer. It’s as cool and breezy as white, but much more flattering on my complexion.
Big hugs & tons of happy weekend wishes,
♥ Jessica
The folks in Holbrook are super nice! And if you like national parks, it’s kinda between the Painted Desert and the Grand Canyon. I am so happy I got to go!
What fun! On my very long list of places to visit!
