A Drive Down the 100 Year Old Christmas Tree Lane

December 15, 2020, 2 Comments on A Drive Down the 100 Year Old Christmas Tree Lane

Amid this pandemic, there is a strong need for fun, while of course staying safe. And with the Christmas season, I’m even more thankful for festive holiday lights, including Christmas Tree Lane, an LA area tradition that just turned 100, laying claim to the “oldest large scale outdoor Christmas display in the world.” Normally, Christmas…

What’s on your Christmas (play)list?

November 25, 2020, 4 Comments on What’s on your Christmas (play)list?

With Thanksgiving tomorrow, many, including myself, already are in the Christmas spirit, which means it’s time to blast some Christmas music and that means once again sharing some selections from my massive Christmas music collection. Many a Christmas song deal with gifts, both the kind we want and maybe even the kind we don’t. Below you’ll…

Anaheim Halloween Parade – Drive Thru Style

October 28, 2020, 3 Comments on Anaheim Halloween Parade – Drive Thru Style

I’m lucky enough to live in a town that has a Halloween parade every year. Under normal circumstances, there is a fall festival during the day before the parade starts. The festival is full of games, artists selling their unique works, and live music. Then as the sun sets the parade, with its collection of…

The Long Lost Matchmaking Rituals of Halloween

October 21, 2020, 6 Comments on The Long Lost Matchmaking Rituals of Halloween

When it comes to holidays about true love, one typically thinks about Valentine’s Day, and not Halloween. But yes, the time of year we typically associate with more macabre imagery used to have a rather romantic element, the rituals of Halloween matchmaking. Some of the earliest noted methods of Halloween matchmaking are from 18th century…

A buffet piece sits on the back wall of the dining room. Atop the buffet is a diecut owl, cat atop a skull, a skeleton wearing a pirate costume, in the middle a spirit board themed to the House on Haunted Hill, with a woman screaming, skeleton, and Vincent Price, to the right of it a plastic jack o'lantern with a black party hat with an orange cat atop it, and next to it a diecut skull. Hanging above all of it are themed framed pieces. On the left is a framed segment of a paper table cloth featuring an illustration of a haunted house. Halloween is Creeping in Early

September 16, 2020, 6 Comments on Halloween is Creeping in Early

Normally I don’t share my Halloween decor until early October, because despite decorating mid-September, I tend to spend the remaining weeks of September combing antique malls and flea markets for fresh vintage finds to add. But, this year obviously is much, much different. I’ve taken COVID-19 extremely seriously, and despite many antique malls reopening, and…

Beyond the Monster Mash

September 2, 2020, 3 Comments on Beyond the Monster Mash

It’s September, and while I may have started decorating for Halloween two weeks ago, I would say it’s officially the spooky season! Which means it’s time to share another spooktacular playlist! Long time readers may remember that awhile back I started a tradition of sharing selections from my ever growing Halloween playlist, but if you’re…

Valentine’s Day Lunch on Main Street

February 19, 2020, 3 Comments on Valentine’s Day Lunch on Main Street

Over the years I’ve mentioned that I’m not the biggest fan of Valentine’s Day. But it’s slowly grown on me. However Patrick and I have never do anything big, and don’t exchange gifts. Since moving to California, I’ve used Valentine’s Day as an excuse to wear something red and/or pink, maybe with hearts, and go…

Roaring into the 20s

January 2, 2020, 4 Comments on Roaring into the 20s

I hope everyone had a lovely and safe New Year’s. Like the past two since we bought our house, we hosted a party, which was full of food, drinks, and wonderfully dressed friends. Like many, we opted for a 20s themed NYE party, because, really, why the hell not? I also had a 20s style…

Step into Whoville during Grinchmas

December 26, 2019, 1 Comment on Step into Whoville during Grinchmas

The fanciful town of Whoville from How the Grinch Stole Christmas pops up in the middle of Universal Studios each holiday season, and while I’ve missed it the past couple years, I was darn sure to make it this year! While there may be three versions of How the Grinch Stole Christmas now, Grinchmas pays…

November things. The boys tried to help decorate f November things. The boys tried to help decorate for Christmas, so things have taken way longer than I thought. Friends are the best. Disneyland surprises. And a new car!
This morning Patrick and I went to Disneyland basi This morning Patrick and I went to Disneyland basically just to eat as much holiday food as we could. It’s been on the chilly for us in California, so I bundled up but wanted to stay comfy, and ended up looking like a David Crosby groupie. Not a bad look for throwing it together at 6 am! From the Holiday Beef Dinner Potato to the gingerbread cookies (the best ones are from Harbor Galley!) to the Cranberry Pomegranate Mint Julep (it’s no Watermelon Julep but it’s still tasty!) we filled our bellies right as it started to sprinkle.

It took over a week to be able to come up with coh It took over a week to be able to come up with coherent words for how I’m feeling after the election. Over on the blog you can find a list of institutions Patrick and I currently support or have previously supported. They offer aid to various threatened groups, provide resources, teaching tools, and ways you can be active. Link can be found in stories and bio!

November so far. I can’t believe November is over November so far. I can’t believe November is over half over. I haven’t been able to blog for several reasons. 1. Both Pat and I caught a cold. Yes, a cold. We tested for COVID multiple times and were negative. 2. The election. Reflections on which will be shared this week on the blog. 3. We have started our office renovation. Well I guess we completed Phase 2. Phase 1 was when we build the wall. Anyway, we painted, laid carpet down, and moved some stuff around. Phase 3 will be making a custom corner wall unit. Meanwhile I finally packed the last Halloween box today. It was the bathroom decor, and began to deep clean. I hope to haul in the Christmas decor this week. How about y’all? How are you holding up? Have you decorated for the holidays?
We need each other more than ever now. We can be s We need each other more than ever now. We can be scared. I am the most scared I’ve ever been in my whole life. We can take today to rest and mourn. My simple advice is look around you. Find those you trust. Build a better community and future with them. And with them we will fight. We must never stop fighting to create a place where everyone is equal. If you learn of protests, groups, programs, anything, that helps others, post it, share it, encourage people to attend, and attend yourself.
So much is at stake. Vote! But don’t stop there. G So much is at stake. Vote! But don’t stop there. Get involved in your community. Create positive change on your own street. Make a space that is welcoming and inclusive. 💙
Houdini is ready to be packed away. 🎃 But in all s Houdini is ready to be packed away. 🎃 But in all seriousness, black cats are some of the best cats around. They are not bad luck and they are NOT to be used as live, temporary Halloween decorations. A very tragic reality, and a contributing factor to why they are often not available for adoption during October. Sadly because of superstition black cats are the least adopted, and make up roughly a third of the cats available for adoption. So please consider adopting one if you’re looking for a furry companion! They are incredibly affectionate and fun loving! 🐈‍⬛
