For Sunday’s episode of Mad Men I felt in the mood for a bit of flapper flair (since the week brought the release of the trailer for Baz Luhrmann’s remake of The Great Gatsby) but sixties style of course!

I can’t help constantly doing the Twist in this outfit.  It is just too much fun.

The late 1960s and early 1970s had a bit of a love affair with the flapper look.  A revival that brought back fringe flair and sheath fits to the 60s go-go dresses, thanks to a small grouping of very successful films that were released during that time period that took place during the 20s and 30s, including Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Funny Girl (1968), The Sting (1971) and The Great Gatsby (1974).  And this dress highlights that spin perfectly.

Hostess Nico Bella was out for the evening, and in her place was the ever humorous Tony from Tony Starlight’s Supper Club.  He gave away one $25 gift certificate to his club to the best dress male and another to the best dressed female.  Patrick didn’t even bother to go up, since he knew he would lose out to a regular we’ve gotten to know who always shows up in a three-piece suit, complete with French cuffs.  I can’t get Patrick in a tie every night… sigh As for myself, I went up on stage with several other gals, including one who was wearing an amazing mod floor length dress that was her mother’s during college, but the prize went to a woman who was dressed as Uhura from the original Star Trek series in a nod to last week’s episode.

So I must talk about this episode…and there are going to be spoilers!

Alright. I don’t want to say it. But I’m going to. I think Mad Men jumped the shark with this episode.  What moment exactly was it?  Joan accepting a 5% partnership in SCDP in return for sleeping with one of the members of Jaguar in order to ensure the agency’s winning of the account.  I don’t know why they felt they had to go the direction they did.  Is it because they saw no way out for Joan with regards to money?  Is that why she did it?  I mean, honestly, we never really get to hear why she did it.  We can only just assume it was because she was fearful of her financial future now that she lacks a husband.  But honestly, couldn’t we just have say Lane leave his wife and shack up with Joan?  That wouldn’t have made me feel like losing my popcorn where this situation did.  I am also unsure toward Don’s whole perspective on the situation.  He obviously has no problem with prostitution since we know he frequented at least one escort during season four, and he had no qualms about visiting a brothel earlier this season.  But suddenly it’s a problem, and he doesn’t want to work with “people like that”.

Then we have Peggy…poor overlooked Peggy.  Overlooked by the characters that is, she has been by no means overlooked by the viewers.  I am terribly sorry to see Peggy leave, because without her there will now lack that ever needed strong female character.  Sure, Joan is strong, but her and Peggy are totally different.  In fact, Joan admitted that she never wanted what Peggy did.  However, has that now changed? Now that Joan’s knight in shining armor turned out to be one hell of a jerk.  In some respects, I now view Joan as someone just attempting to survive, while Peggy is out there getting what she wants, which is what I liked so much about her.  She demanded recognition in an area and in a time when it was uncommon.  It will be interesting if they attempt to continue Peggy’s story even though she is no longer a part of SCDP.
